Attaching a File to a Survey Question

Sometimes, you may wish to ask a respondent’s feedback on a specific file or document.

Doing this within a specific question requires use of the file library and inserting a link to the question.

Uploading your file (or files).

If you don’t know how to do this, full instructions can be found in the File Library Guide.

After uploading your file, copy its URL to the clipboard.

Click to open File Library Guide in a new window.

Linking to the File in the Question

Adding the link to the question is simple, but we want to make sure that the linked file is opened in a new browser window, rather than the one that contains the survey – because if it opens in the survey window, the respondent may not be able to complete it.

  1. In the survey, create your question, and write your question text, including any text that you want to use as the hyperlink to the file.
  2. Click “Enable Editor”
  3. Select the text you want to use as a link and click the “link” icon.
  4. Paste the URL of the file (that you copied to the clipboard) into the "URL:" box.
  5. Click the “target” tab of the dialogue box and choose “New Window (_blank)”
  6. Click “OK”

Your question should now contain a link to the desired file.

It’s always a good idea to test things like this with the preview function to ensure the link is behaving as expected.
