List of Piping Tags

Piping allows you to insert dynamic data—such as survey details, respondent information, or previous answers—directly into your survey text.

Note: The piping engine is regularly updated to support new features, meaning available tags can change over time. The list below covers the primary tags currently supported, but they can change at anytime.

Before you start

  • Plan Requirements: Piping only works if your account plan includes the Question Piping feature. If you do not have this feature, the tags will appear as literal text to the respondent.
  • Manual Entry: While the survey designer's built-in picker allows you to easily insert [question(...)] tags from previous pages, the system tags listed below must be typed into the editor by hand.
  • Typos & Blank Tags: Tags are not case-sensitive. However, if a tag is typed incorrectly or unrecognized, the system will simply remove it and display a blank space rather than showing the broken tag to the respondent.
  • Context Matters: Not every tag will have a value at every stage. For example, a respondent's end date or scoring total will only populate once a response is submitted.
  • Workflows: Workflows and Case Management have their own specific piping menus which may differ slightly from the standard survey tags listed here.

Custom Parameter Tags

These tags require you to input specific parameters (like your own question IDs, variable names, or contact column headers). Because these depend on your unique survey setup, you will need to locate the specific ID or name within your account.

  • Survey Variables: [variable(name)]
  • URL Query Strings: [url(paramName)] (Only works if the respondent accessed the survey via an entry URL containing the query string).
  • Contact List Fields: [contact(fieldName)] or [contact(columnN)]
  • Directory / Entity: [directory(columnName)], [directory(column_ref)], or [entity(property)]
  • External Integrations: [integration(id:field)]

Question Answers

To pipe specific question answers, you can use [question(QID)] or [question(QID,OptionID)].
You can also append specific meta suffixes using the format [question(QID:meta)]. Allowed meta suffixes are: value, valuepiped, semicolon, optiontext, score, position, text, comments, columntext, and bool.

Legacy Tags & Passwords: If you are using old tags (such as [scoring_total], [x], or [userid]), the system will automatically convert them to the current format in the background. Please note that the [survey(password)] tag has been retired for security reasons and will now always display as blank.
